Artist Statement

I have always been attracted to the wide open western landscapes of growing up in Texas.  The quiet serenity of the cows, the heavy fragrant air and the hum of cicadas.

I have been an artist since I was about 13 years old when I became interested in drawing and excelled in my middle school art class. After trying a more sensible career path, I eventually gave into my passion and received a BA in Fine Arts from California State University, Northridge and then received a teaching credential and spent the next 25 years teaching art, ceramics, and art history at the high school level. While teaching I furthered my education and earned a Masters of Art in Art Education at CSUN and a Masters of Fine Art at Azusa Pacific University.

I have focused on a variety of media throughout my artistic career; I first explored photography during my Bachelors degree and then worked in drawing and painting while teaching art.  I have also created art in ceramics, mosaics, murals and folk crafts as well. Since retiring from teaching though, I’ve worked exclusively in oil paint.  I still look to the natural world for inspiration and have been experimenting with plain air painting as well, being outside capturing the beauty around me.  My style evolves and refines, and I am lucky to be able to paint every day always looking for new challenges.
